How to Read a Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is like a report card for cannabis products, verifying that a licensed third-party lab has tested the product for potency, purity, and safety. Here’s a simple guide to help you review one and ensure the product meets your expectations:
1. Check the Header: Does It Match Your Product?
- Report Date: Is the report recent? Fresh results are more reliable.
- Lab Name: Make sure the lab is reputable and independent.
- Product Name & Batch Number: These should match the product label exactly—no mismatches here!
2. Potency Results: What’s in Your Product?
- Cannabinoids (THC, CBD): How much THC or CBD is in each dose? Look for mg/g or percentages.
- Optional Terpenes & Flavonoids: Some COAs list additional compounds like linalool (calming) or quercetin (antioxidant). If included, these can give insight into the product’s effects.
📝 Tip: If the lab didn’t detect a compound, you’ll see ” (less than the limit of quantification) or “ND” (not detected). This just means the amount is so tiny it’s negligible.
3. Footer: Is the COA Legitimate?
The footer includes:
- Signature from Lab Leadership confirming the results.
- Lab Contact Information for questions or additional details.
Final Thoughts
If everything matches, the product is verified and good to go! For added peace of mind, some COAs even include a link to download the full lab report. Remember, transparency builds trust—so brands providing detailed COAs are committed to quality.
